As dancers, many of us find dancing to live music intimidating. We become comfortable with the predictable ease of canned music and prepared choreography. However, with the right instruction, familiarity of Arabic rhythms, and open communication with musicians, every dancer can learn to shimmy successfully to live music. In the Deciphering the Drum workshop, James and Mistress Jacqueline will teach students proper dancer/musician communication, tip and tricks, such as the “Rule of Four”, and five popular Arabic rhythms with corresponding dance combinations you may use to create your own drum solo. Handouts will be provided.
